Short Biography: I have contributed to the development of the field of Transportation and, in particular, to that related to the impact of railways in Europe. I have devoted the financing that I have previously received to this subject, and also several PhD and postdoc grants. The largest project that I have received as the PI was from the ESF-Eurocores (2007-10) and allowed me to mobilise € 1.3 M; this was shared between seven work teams in different European countries. My approach at that time was focused on establishing a European Transportation GIS based on various different national GISs, but only five countries received financing for this. The leadership task that I have performed since then was recognised in the paper (Kasraian, et al, 2016, Transport reviews, 36(6), 772-792), where it was shown that of 19 publications reviewed about H-GIS in Europe, 9 were either mine or were initiatives based on the previously cited ESF project. These works have provided a general context, but more recently I have started focusing on specific areas: the Nordic countries, the Balkans, SW Europe and Spain. This insight is allowing me to think about new methods of analysis and how to obtain better results and incorporate new data, from specific countries, relating to main roads, railway stations and ports. This has convinced me of the tremendous potential for analysis that exists if I can establish a more complex GIS database.

Organization Type: Non-academic institution

Organization Name: FFE, Spanish Railways Foundation

Short Biography: He is the manager of documentation and research at the Spanish Railways Foundation (SRF). PhD at the University of Madrid he is in charge of the training programme and the research initiatives in the SRF. Some of his publications refer to the transportation of freight and passengers in Spain. He is building a database on transportation infrastructure that would be of great important for the new PhD candidate.

Added Value: Dr. Muñoz is the manager of documentation and research at the SRF. The Land Transport Training Center of the SRF has a track record of more than 30 years in the dissemination and transmission of transport knowledge. It has a international network of collaboration composed by private and public companies in the field of terrestrial transportation. A future PhD student would benefit from all these contacts and facilities. The Center offers technical and human resources to deliver, organize and manage any type of training: in- person and online. For face-to-face training, there are classrooms equipped with computer and multimedia equipment; in addition to classrooms for the development of workshops, a technical library and other spaces for common and networking areas. Online training is carried out through a virtual training platform, with interactive online multimedia content, based on the use of new technologies adapted to learning processes. The Transport Training Center organizes all types of activities (courses, conferences, seminars, etc.), aimed at providing specialized training in the field of land transport. Training actions both our own and in collaboration with companies, universities and other private and public administration entities.

ResearchGroup

Description: The aim of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is to serve as a reference group for studies of European Integration approached from a historical perspective. The central theme to be tackled will be the extent to which transport infrastructure has helped to consolidate a common, integrated space in Europe. The current problems associated with territorial integration within Europe include: cross-border issues, territorial cohesion, freight transportation at the national and European level, and regional integration. The Centre promotes research, PhD education and diffusion. These three aspects complement each other. We think that innovating research guarantees quality education and a much richer dialogue between civil society and experts. This solid base offers the best way to foster dialogue between academics and society. We promote the collaboration between universities, graduate students, the media, policy-makers and organisations that are specifically associated with civil society.

ResearchLine

Description: Title: Transport and territorial development in 20th century: Spain in the European context. This PhD project proposes an ambitious plan based on a new database and innovative objectives. The majority of the data have already been gathered in previous projects The PhD will consist on studying the increasing facility with which people and goods are able to move through Europe and its countries using transport infrastructure. Our innovative approach consists of analysing Spain in the context of the long-term process of European Integration. Hypotheses: 1.Our first hypothesis is that despite the improvement of transport infrastructures, the differences in terms of market access and territorial imbalances have been increasing across the territory of Spain and also Europe. This is due to the dramatic process of population concentration in core areas, while the periphery has undergone a depopulation process. 2. Our second hypothesis is that forms of terrestrial transport infrastructure (in particular, the road and railway networks) contribute to the process of state building.

Others

Description: We will produce comprehensive documents for the general public about the decline rural areas compared to urban agglomerations and the role played by transportation flows.
